Maharshi Dayanand University, originally known as Rohtak University, Rohtak, was founded in 1976 by an Act No. 25 of the Haryana Legislative Assembly with the goal of promoting inter-disciplinary higher education and research in the domains of environmental, ecological, and life sciences. In 1977, it was renamed Maharshi Dayanand University after a famous visionary and social reformer, Maharshi Dayanand. In its early stages, it was unitary and residential, but in November 1978, it became an affiliating University. In March of 1979, the University received recognition from the University Subsidies Commission, India’s higher education regulatory authority, for central government grants.
In 2022, Maharshi Dayanand University is rated 76 in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework.
